It all started with two like-minded law students in 2013.
These law students cared about kids. They wanted to figure out what they could do to make the world a better place for youth in their city by combining their passions with the skills they were learning in the classroom.
And so, HAYA (Hastings Association of Youth Advocates) was born at UC Hastings College of the Law.
Within a semester, these two students were able to recruit a couple more of their classmates.
The members came to trainings, worked with community leaders, and shared stories of their past experiences helping youth. Soon, the school district and the Court enthusiastically got on board and partnerships began forming with advocacy groups. The word spread, and HAYA continued to grow and grow.
Today, we have a large pool of active members and huge support from the Bay Area legal community as well as other youth advocacy leaders. As we continue to build new relationships, we remember to stay true to our goal: to promote better outcomes for youth in the city of San Francisco and beyond.
The time is short and the work is plentiful. But by taking steps to help even one youth at a time, we are collectively changing lives. And in the end, isn't that what it's all about?
HAYA is open to any law student attending UC Hastings College of the Law. If you are an alum or community member involved in youth advocacy, we would LOVE to hear from you!
